Roll up, roll up, to the annual spectacle that is the DVLA’s list of number plates too naughty or naff for the nation’s roads. Yes, it’s that time of the year again when the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency plays schoolmaster, ruling out the registrations that might make your Nan blush or your local vicar tut-tut.
From the downright cheeky to the accidentally amusing, these combinations are banned faster than you can say “oops” at a family dinner after mentioning politics.
The DVLA has had its work cut out sifting through potential plates to protect our innocent eyes. With new registrations popping up in March (’24) and September (’74), there’s a fresh batch of letter and number combos that just couldn’t make the cut.
So, what’s off the menu this year? Let’s dive in, shall we?
The UK’s system of car registrations, a mix of letters for location, digits for the year, and a trio of random letters, usually keeps things as dull as dishwater. However, every so often, a combination comes along that’s too spicy for the road.
This year, the DVLA’s banned list includes gems that might have you sniggering like a schoolkids.
Take “W24 NKR” for instance; imagine the double-takes on the motorway. Or “SL24 GSS,” which sounds more like a secret code for the world’s least subtle spy. And then there’s “SH24 GED,” which we’re sure was meant to be about sheep farming…sure.
Tony Clark, a number plate connoisseur from Plates4Less, couldn’t resist a peek behind the DVLA’s curtain. Armed with a Freedom of Information request, he uncovered the list dubbed ‘Too Rude for the Road.’
Among the hundreds banned, we find “BO24 LOK,” “FA24 NNY,” and “AS24 HLE” – proving that sometimes, creativity knows no bounds, even if taste does.
It seems Brits have a hearty appetite for these risqué registrations, with Plates4Less noting hundreds of daily searches for the saucier side of the alphabet. And yes, the searches get as blue as a comedian at a late-night show, with the ‘C word’ and ‘F***’ making regular appearances.
Despite the DVLA’s best efforts, some naughty numbers still slip through the net. Rude but legal plates like “S3XXX,” “OH69,” and “PEN155” somehow make it onto the open road, proving there’s always a loophole for the determinedly dodgy.
